Think Tank 16 Oct

Power to the Pixel: The Cross-Media Film Forum
at the Times BFI London Film Festival
14 – 15 October 2009

After two days of debates, discussions, case studies and presentations, dinners, drinks and conversation, Power to the Pixel gathered together the participating experts from the forum to brainstorm the future models of a sustainable film and media community.

The concentration of this year’s Think Tank at Power to the Pixel was on cross-media developments.

The term ‘cross-media’, or ‘transmedia,’ has entered mainstream business discussion but from a generally narrow perspective.

This Think Tank session aimed to debate issues in a much more open way – not just about the effect on the existing media and film industries but about the potential for new forms of creativity, finance, distribution etc.

The emphasis went beyond the technical to the real core issue of customer interaction with content.

In order to help shape the discussion, the event was split into four broad areas. This approach was an aide and guide but the Think Tank aims to enable open and free discussion.

The chair: This year’s Think Tank was chaired by Michael Gubbins, a journalist, consultant and longstanding supporter of Power to the Pixel. From 2004-2009 he was editor of Screen International, leaving to set up his own consultancy, largely working around digital media issues. His clients have included BAFTA, UK Film Export Group, Europa Cinemas, Rotterdam film festival, the Swedish Film Institute and CineRegio. He is a director of the Screenwriters Festival and a member of the advisory board at Power to the Pixel and Met Film School. He has chaired more than 50 conferences around the world in recent years. Michael has been a journalist and editor for more than 20 years and has written for newspapers including The Times, The Guardian and Time Out.
